In 2023 you will see more and more WiFi 7, the new internet standard. How big is the step forward and what are the benefits?
Read on after the ad.
All about Wi-Fi 7
When you talk about wireless internet, you are talking about WiFi. What you may not know is that this technology is constantly improving. Each major improvement gets a new grade. This year, for example, we welcome the first devices that support WiFi 7.
Often the biggest difference with new versions is the speed. Take WiFi 5, with which a maximum of 3.5 Gbps could be achieved. With WiFi 6 that became 9.6 Gbps. These are the maximum speeds you can theoretically achieve with this technology. That does not mean that if you have a WiFi modem in the meter cupboard and use your smartphone in the garden, you will actually achieve that speed.
WiFi 7: faster and more stable
You can also recognize WiFi 7 by ‘802.11be’. The most striking thing about this new standard is that it is much faster than WiFi 6. The maximum speed with WiFi 7 is 40 Gbps. That is more than four times as fast as the predecessor.
To achieve this, various technologies are combined. For example, 320MHz channels are used. These are wider and therefore more data can be sent.
If you previously had to choose whether you connected a device via 2.4GHz or 5GHz, devices with WiFi 7 can connect with multiple channels in different frequencies: 2.4GHz, 5GHz and 6GHz. This not only provides extra speed, but also better stability.
In addition, there is something called Quadrature Amplitude Modulation. This means that more information can be sent and received in less space.
Do I have to buy a new router already?
The first routers that support WiFi 7 will be available soon, but will you have to run straight to the store to get one? No, that is really not necessary at the moment.
To make the most of the benefits, you need two things. First of all, a router that supports WiFi 7 and, in addition, devices with the right chip to handle this technology. However, there are hardly any such devices.
At least some WiFi 7 routers have been revealed during CES. Like the Asus ROG Rapture GT BE-98, a monster of a gaming router with eight hefty antennas. Like a dead spider lying upside down. TP-Link also has several routers ready for the future of WiFi. Qualcomm and MediaTek meanwhile provide the chips that can be put into devices.
These smartphones support Wi-Fi 7
The Xiaomi 13 Pro is the first smartphone in the world that can handle WiFi 7, thanks to a chip from Qualcomm. The Samsung Galaxy S23 that will be unveiled in February probably does not yet have support for WiFi 7.
