The community art project Cultuur in de Wijk will be located in the Twistvlietpark in Stadshagen in May and June. Young people from the age of 15 can work together on an artistic expression there on six Friday evenings. This takes place in a cozy, festival-like setting, supervised by artists.
First, they go in search of what keeps the young people busy and how they view the world. Then the young people choose a theme for their artwork. “Making young people look at the world as artists, that’s what it’s all about,” says Jolan van de Waeter.
As a project leader, Van de Waeter is the driving force behind Cultuur in de Wijk. “Artists look at the world around them differently. Their work is a reflection of what is going on in society. During Cultuur in de Wijk we try to convey to the young people the way of looking and thinking that is characteristic of artists,” she explains. “We challenge them to be curious. What can I do with a theme, how do I relate to it? What can I do with different materials, what happens when I start working with them? We want them to experiment and dare to make mistakes. Working with others is also a challenge.”
Job Bareman, youth worker at Travers Welzijn, is enthusiastic about the project. “It is important that young people come into contact with art,” he says. “Art is a way of expressing your feelings and making complicated subjects a topic for discussion.” Van de Waeter adds: “Collaboration with artists stimulates the imagination of young people. In this way they become more aware of their talents. They will also see that they can help shape this world! During each project we celebrate what the young people have come up with and created. We think it is important that they learn to be proud of what they invent, make and do.”
The community art project in Stadshagen will start on Friday evening May 13 and will then take place on May 20, June 3, 10, 17 and the last on Thursday June 23. Always from 19:00 to 21:00. Stadshagen is the fifth Zwolle district where Culture in the District takes place. In 2020, the project visited the Kamperpoort and Pierik districts, and in 2021 Aa-landen and Westenholte.
